C1790 Paris Louis XVI/Directoire Mahogany Commode
This is a form of French mahogany three drawer commode familiar to Australian buyers through the many late 19th century reproductions that are plentiful in our market. When one has a chance to see a genuine 18th century one, the copies look rather pallid by comparison. Rich mahogany with an excellent patina contrasted with gilt brass mounts, this elegant commode would enrich any apartment or house. The St Anne marble top conforms to the commode silhouette and has a crisp edge molding. Apparently unsigned. It was bought by its last owners in London in 1999 from Heytesbury Antiques for GBP5,000, so it is quite a recent arrival in this country.
60 by 126 cm, and 84cm tall.
