C1795 Painted Sheraton “Fancy” Armchair
C1795 Painted Sheraton Armchair
A charming and exceptionally elegant beechwood Sheraton armchair. This late 18th century chair has been redecorated with excellent painted ornaments sometime later, and originally had cane for the seat. Now it is freshly and fully upholstered. This provides an elegant and light-hearted contrast to polished timber furniture. Please note the side view. The generosity of the curves in the back stile and rear leg is not going to be found in later copies.
This was bought with a provenance: " Formerly from the Estate Dr Percy Longhurst, Burlington Place, London and physician to His Majesty Edward VII" which his certainly not confirmed by our research. Spurious provenances are not uncommon. I have a friend whose family received a rather unpleasant Edwardian tea service from a Captain (Fred?) Cook, and time now has embellished it with a glow of unearned richness, as descendants assumed it was THE Captain Cook. Alas!
