C1680 Italian Oil on Canvas Painting of Ariadne and Bacchus

$2,750.00

A late 17th century oil on canvas (relined) mythological painting of the meeting of Ariadne and Bacchus, which includes a putto and a dog, in a sylvan landscape. The frame is 67 cm by 6 56 cm.  I have included a picture of the work prior to cleaning. It is much brighter now it has returned form the painting restorer.

Ariadne was the daughter of Minos, King of Crete. She helped Theseus navigate the maze with a ball of thread. Theseus slew the minotaur, and eloped with Ariadne, but he gave her up to Dionysus, who may already have been her husband. Myths were transmitted orally, so there are numerous conflicting tradition in this myth, as with so many.
