Richard Cosway Georgian Miniature on Ivory Snuff Box.C 1780.


(SOLD)  A fine Georgian miniature C1780 set on the top of a capstan shaped ivory snuff box.The miniature is signed Cosway, and appears actually to be by Ricard Cosway (5 November 1742 – 4 July 1821), the famous English society painter. The gilt metal mount is backed with 18th century French bookprint, with Mrs Bukeley inscribed in ink. The back matches other Cosway backs. There are other Cosways with this column used as a background. Richard and Maria Cosway's friendship in 18th century France with Jefferson (later Us President) is related in the Hollywood film about Thomas Jefferson (see Youtube!). The box is 7.5 cm wide and 2.5 cm high.
