1840 Imperial Russian Muscovite Silver Beaker

$1,100.00 (Hold FM)

Alexander Ist period, this finely wrought beaker is 7 cm wide and 7.7 cm tall. It weighs a hefty 114 grams. Traces of nielo remain, but it is mostly gone. The beaker has two almost circular reserves. One shows a fantastic architectural scene, and the other shows an equestrian on his horse. He wears a military hat, so it is not an image of the famous statue in St Petersburg of Peter the Great. The remaining surface is decorated with delicate scrollwork, against a pounced background which shows traces of gilding. Moscow, 1840, 84 silver(87.5% being 84/96). Hallmarked with the date 1840, Moscow's St George slaying the dragon, and the maker's initials A.K. in script (known but unidentified). There is also a later oval hallmark post-1926, so it was still in Russia at that date.
