1859 “Old Vienna” Porcelain Tureen, and Plate
This rare Old Vienna (Alt Wien) porcelain tureen has pressnumern for 1859, so it was made only 5 years before the Imperial porcelain works was closed down by act of parliament and the signature of the Emperor. Many of the 18th and 19th century moulds were sent to the secondary porcelain works of Austria-Hungary: Herend, which still survives today. A new Herend piece may be cast in a 200 year old mold from the long defunct Vienna factory! "Royal Vienna" is completely unrelated to this grand factory. The tureen is typical form for the factory, but has lost its lid and original stand. The current plate is probably from the same service but unmarked. Good condition. 13 cm tall and 19 cm wide.
