1860s 56cm Copeland Parian Figure “Maidenhood” after E.G. Papworth

$750.00 with some repair

This impressive and large Copeland Parian figure was first published in Sept 1861. It stands 56 cm tall. Parian porcelain was made to resemble white statuary marble from the Greek island of Paros. Our imposing figure has some damage. There are some chips to the edge of the bae, and madam's head has been glued, conveniently at the embroidered neckband of here dress. As Bonhams observes:

A LARGE COPELAND PARIAN FIGURE OF MAIDENHOOD
Modelled by Edgar G Papworth Jnr., the lady standing in a sorrowful pose on a titled circular base, 56cm high, impressed COPELAND published Sept 2 1861

Footnotes

  • The original statue by Papworth was shown at the Royal Academy in 1860. The subject illustrates a line from a poem by Longfellow, see the Parian Phenomenon (1989), p.154, fig.519
