1865 Imperial Russian Trompe l’oeil Silver Charka (Vodka Nip), St Petersburg

$550.00 in faux wood

Wonderfully amusing, this trompe l'oeil beaker is made to resemble coopered timber. Trust the Russians to make precious materials imitate humble ones: the opposite of most European endeavours! Made in St Petersburg in 1865, the charka weighs 56 grams, so is quite substantial for a beaker 5.7 cm tall and 5.2 cm in diameter. The maker "ES", is Eric Strand. The "S" indicates the maker's mark is in Latin, not Cyrillic, in which such a letter does not exist.   The circular cartouche to the front is inscribed in Cyrillic and dated 1869.
