1875-1890 Spode Set of 4 Crested Plates. 4th Marquess of Ely.

This set of four plates is by Spode, and the backstamp dates them top between 1875 and 1890. The retailer's mark for Thomas Goode is also on the back. Diameter is 22 and a bit cm. The is a small chip to one on the edge. The hand painted crest is of a boar's head and the motto is "Loyal a Mort", meaning Loyal unto Death.  Both the crest and the motto are used by a swag of families, but only the Loftus and Loftie families combine both. Of course, if your name is Smith, you do not have to mention the Loftus/Loftie connection!

To get down to tin tacks one needs all three components: motto, crest and shield.
