19th C. Miniature Painting of Mrs Hallett after Gainsborough


The full size Gainsborough is in the National Gallery, London and has been since 1954. It was painted in 1785 when both Mr Hallett and Miss Elizabeth Stephen were 21, just prior to their marriage. The large double portrait show both figures full length walking in a landscape.In consequence it has long been popularly called "The Morning Walk". The miniature painting from the middle of the century before last, is a detail: it shows Mrs Hallett's head only. On ivory, the oval portrait is mounted in a black Japanned wooden rectangular frame with a deep oval chamfer, and a brass bezel.
