19th Century Carved Grey Marble Medici Lion, Grand Tour
This, probably early, 19th century Medici lion is well carved sculpture in grey veined marble, with an appealing weathered patina. It stands 18 cm tall, 23 cm wide and 7.5 cm dep. It is probably Italian. The Medici lions are a pair of lions that currently flank the steps in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. Our lion is a copy of the 2nd century Roman original, although it may not always have been freestanding. The sculptor Flaminio Vacca, who made the pair (mirror image) to the Roman lion in 1594 to 1598, tells us that the Roman lion was found as a high relief, and was separated from the wall and the back reworked in the 1590s.
