19th Century Oil On Canvas Painting in the manner of Caravaggio (1571-1610)

$1,250.00 (HOLD M&G)

The fluid posture and strong chiaroscuro of this portrait of a child are very reminiscent of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, who lived most of his life in Rome. This combination of approaches eventually became known as tenebrism. Caravaggio's work greatly influenced Rubens, Bernini and Rembrandt, and was an impetus for the development of the Baroque out of Mannerism. Hopefully, someone may recognise this image, which I suspect is a 19th century copy of a detail in a large painting.

The modern gilt frame is 63 cm by 74 cm. The painting was cleaned and varnished in 2013. We are delighted to have it back again to offer to the discerning public.
