This magnificent three drawer early 18th century French Regence commode is probably as late as the 1740s, and Louis XV in period. It is bow fronted, the drawers being enriched with a traditional contrasting "barber's pole" inlay. The sides are beautifully paneled and the corners rounded with a recessed panel, that shows the influence of stonemasonry on baroque furniture of this period. The conforming dusty pink marble top is finished with a lamb's tongue molding. The wonderful brasses seem to be period, but not original to this commode.

This is a much more commonplace thing than many people might expect. Especially with British chests, it is almost impossible to state if the brasses are original or not, when the brasses and chest are the same style, period and rank, and no other holes are visible. The early industialisation of Britain ensured standardisation of brassware sizes. Frequently, a 6 handle chest in need of correct brassware inherits brassware from a similar 8 handle chest with one brass missing. More often than not, the newly applied, but period, handles match perfectly the dark silhouette of the original(?) lost handles. Voila! Impossible to tell if the handles are original or not. Few pieces of furniture 200 years old have existed in a vacuum for two centuries. Most have been modernised, jazzed up, simplified, etc. to conform to the whims of fashion or the needs of convenience and practicality.

124 wide and 61 cm deep, the commode stands 85 cm tall.
