40th YEAR SALE! C1820 set 6 Solid Rosewood Regency Chairs

$3,950.00 down from $5250

Nr 36 of 40 (4 to go!) random objects slashed in 2019 to celebrate our 40 years trading in Melbourne, as a thank you to our clients. Was $5,250, now $3,950 (roll of the dice!) Sale price ends New Years Day. Yes, come December this year we will have been supplying antiques to Melbourne for 40 years.

This excellent set of six late Georgian, Regency dining chairs has been finely executed in Brazilian Rosewood, whose dense grain allows delicate yet robust carving. The chairs have sabre hind legs, and are turned and carved with an inverted tulip. The wonderful backs have a simple bar, which is concave, and has a gracefully everted top. The central splat is richly carved with rosettes and acanthus leaves, while the stiles finish with an Ionic scrolled column capital, enriched with egg and dart carving. (although it looks more like dart and dart, all being pointy!) All are in excellent condition, and have fine colour. This is an altogether delicious example of high quality late Georgian furniture. Apart from regluing where necessary, we have upholstered the chairs in a woven paisley fabric, so fashionable at the time. The drop in seats are new, and we have had them made so that they fit over the original cane to protect it, and to provide the upholstered timber chassis seating much preferred by our buyers, who are often a little wary of caned seats, possibly under the mistaken impression that the cane is not durable. I blame the flimsy cane by the yard stuff used commercially on chairs for the last few decades. Cane hand done by the individual hole can last for centuries.
