40th YEAR SALE! Nr 25 of 40. C1795 French Commode/Chest of Drawers

$1,500.00 was $3250 thanks to the dice!

Nr 25 of 40 random objects slashed in 2019 to celebrate our 40 years trading in Melbourne. Was $3250, now $1500 (roll of the dice!)

Made right on the Revolution, this delightful French solid walnut C1795 Louis XVI/Directoire period petit Commode rejoices in wonderful and unusual ball and baluster legs. While these legs are not frequently seen on 18th century French furniture, one can see a variety illustrated pp309 to 359 of Jose Claret Rubira's  "Classical European Furniture Design: French, Spanish and English Period Designs" (Three volumes in one)! Gramercy, New York. Clearly toupie fee and inverse columnar legs are very common, while these interesting and attractive legs were far less so.

The three drawers run smoothly and two of the original angled handles remain. The colour of the walnut is a rich honey gold. The marble is St Annes.
