Weighing 67 grams, this heavy and magnificent Byzantine type gold chain forms a loop that finishes with a large shepherds crook hook. It can be worn as a single chain, popped over the head, with the hook at the bak, Orthodox priest style, or with the hook at the front supporting some fabulous or sentimental jewel, or one's door key. Alternatively, the hook allows a double necklace. The chain is 90 cm long, without the hook. So, as a double chain the total length encircling the neck would be a comfortable 49cm. Probably 19th century. Marked 9ct on a plaque on one link.
