Large and magnificent, this C1740 French open armchair with a flat back, fauteuil a la Reine, is of walnut. The frame is sound and has rich patina and waxed polish. The needlework is ancient and quite possibly original. The carved enrichments are robustly conceived and vigorously executed. The is nothing twee about this impressive chair, regardless of its being entirely composed of voluptuous Rococo curves.

95 cm tall, 67 cm deep and 66 cm wide: big! Basketball player size. This would have been a very grand frame for tiny 18th century people of about 1.4 metres.
