C 1780 French Louis XVI Single Door Cabinet “of a height to lean on”.

$7,950.00 (HOLD 1 JC)

This single door pier cabinet was probably intended as a book press. The sawtooth support system for the adjustable shelves was used in France in the 18th century, but did not cross the channel to England until the 19th century, so it is characteristic of Victorian furniture in Britain. The marble top is original. The keyhole escutcheons are later replacements. The black Japanned shaped plinth base was popular in the reign of Louis XIV in the late 17th century, and can be seen on many Boulle cabinets. It was revived in the late 18th century, but is still unusual at that date, but was used extensively in Second Empire furniture. The cabinet is a meuble hauteur d'appui, a piece of furniture "of a height to lean on". Tulip wood and probably bois de rose (Dalbergia maritima) with ebony and boxwood stringing.

The main timbers are Dalbergia, so three certificates are now required for the cabinet to move between any two countries (CITES)
