C1700 Louis XIV French fauteuil Armchair
Splendidly grand, this baroque era armchair, an fauteuil a la Reine, is walnut with old buff coloured leather upholstery, probably dating for the 1970s or 1980s, so just nicely wearing in. The two front feet are replaced as are two of the seat rails. As with most furniture of this period, its principle purpose was to express the status of the sitter, rather than mere, irrelevant comfort. Fortunately, the average height of people is much greater now than at the end of the 17th century, so the large chair is now a very comfortable size for people near 6 ft (about 180cm). At the end of the 17th century, your status determined which chair you sat in when in a social group. There was no free choice, as your chair was determined by your social position: armchair, backstop, stool, or floor cushion, or you stood, in declining order of rank.
116 cm tall, 74 cm deep and 64 cm wide. Big!
