C1740 Paris Palisander Commode

SOLD

$16,500 This elegant 18th century French commode is a three drawer Louis XV chest sometimes called Tombeau (sarcophagus shaped), or sometimes simply called Galbee (curved). The front is a complex bombe shape curved o both horizontally and vertically. The sides are also complex curves.  The whole is veneered in Palisander. The drawers are oak lined. While the locks seem to be original, the bronzes may or may not be replacements. When the French chemically clean old non-gilded bronzes I cannot tell the difference even when I take them off.

Renottes still produce excellent facsimiles in their factory just outside Paris. They still do a lot of hand finishing and use some of the 19th century machinery. I have had a tour of the four storey 19th century house that encompasses their workshops. Charmingly, it is at the end of a large courtyard, squeezed between modern grey apartment blocks.

98 cm wide and 54 cm deep the commode stands 84 cm tall.
