C1750 French Palisander and Ormolu Commode
SOLD
This fabulous French commode is of bombe or faux Tombeau form, being constructed with both the front and the sides swelling out to be curved in both directions: vertical and horizontal. Naturally, this requires very skilled and complex cabinetmaking. The thick Palisander veneer is laid in parquetry formation giving the effect of three framed rectangular panels across the drawer fronts. Opulent and luxurious though it is, and with oak drawer linings, it is almost certainly not of Parisian manufacture (although the gilt bronzes probably are Parisian). The construction suggests Lyon or much more likely Montebellard. For a comparable commode, also not signed, see P60 in "L'Ebinesterie Provinciale en France au XVIIIe Siecle et Abraham Nichalas Colereau", by Bernard Deloche and Jean-Yves Mornand, Editions Faton, Dijon, 2011. The shaped marble top is original.
130 cm wide, 65 cm deep and 88 cm tall.
