C1765 Louis XV period, Louis XVI style Sofa

$3,250.00 as is

A rare walnut canape a corbeille in the "Greek style”, C1765.  Surmounted by a  trophy representing the arts with a lyre, a palette and brushes, and a pair of trumpets, the sofa has a sweeping concave back. The chair rails are carved with a guilloche frieze, and the legs are square inverted columns with acanthus carving to the edge. Over the last 250 years some of the rinceau carving has worn away.

The Style Grecque  prefigured the mature Louis XVI style of 30 years later. The Style Grecque was probably initiated by the painter and designer Louis-Joseph le Lorrain and popularised by Ange-Laurent Lalive de  Jully, as expounded in pages 170-175 of Bill Pallot, the world authority of 18th century French seating furniture.
The sofa needs upholstery. Fortunately it is currently at Carlo's Upholstery.  The sofa is not mine. It belongs to Kate, the jewellery dealer whose store is within mine. For information contact Kate on 0412 195 964 or kate@imogene.com.au.
