C1770 French Genre Oil Painting
In the tradition of Watteau and Fragonard Fetes Galantes, this sylvan idyll shows a young man playing his bagpipes to two female companions beneath a tree in which hangs a birdcage. A dog and some sheep also listen attentively. A rivulet and house are seen in the distance. One of the women is comforting a recumbent sheep. The quality of the clothes clearly demonstrates that the trio are playing at being shepherds and shepherdesses, no doubt influenced by the writings of Rousseau. The original gilded carved wood frame, a typical Louis XVI reed and ribbon, has been simply nailed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas. 78.5 cm 64.5 cm.
