C1770 French Louis XV Period Transitional Vitrine/Bibliotheque
This two door, three drawer, French display cabinet or bookcase was made in the reign of Louis XV, C1770 in the transitional style. The griotte marble top is original. The whole is handsomely veneered in two types of Dalbergia. The bronzes include sabot for the feet, handles, keyhole escutcheons, and hinges for the upper doors.
94 cm wide. 45 cm deep and 140 cm tall. This height is unusual in British furniture, but is very practical. it allows the eye to see over the piece so the room seems bigger, and provides a top suitable for the safe display of treasures. It can take the place of a fireplace in a room: the anchor to a decorative scheme.
A couple of related vitrines are illustrated page 129 of Giacomo Wannenes standard reference :"Eighteenth Century French Furniture".
