C1770 Very Rare Set of 4 Adam, Mayhew and Ince style, Library Chairs in Mahogany

$6,500.00 rare set of 4

This is a very rare set of four English, 18th century library chairs, in the manner of Mayhew and Ince https://www.rollestonantiques.com/artworks/9451-a-set-of-four-george-iii-mahogany-hall-english-circa-1770/. . Normally found as singles or pairs, upholstered back library chairs are rarely found in a larger set. The legs are in mahogany, and the kick back of the rear legs is wonderful, as is the carving, which keeps the trapezoidal anklets parallel to the floor. Each leg is square section, with a carved recessed panel and a roundel on the two outside faces of the legs only. The interior two sides of the each leg are left plain. This is a restraint later furniture copyists can never quite come to grips with, and normally all sides of the leg are treated equally, in a mechanical and mindless way. We are offering these unrestored, partly because buyers of such furnitures often like to supervise the restoration process themselves (or leave them untouched), and partly because the queue for restoration with Julian, Piero and Carlo is already very long!

At 95 cm tall, 62 cm deep and 55 cm wide, these are impressive seating.
