C1775 Spectacular George III Adam Open Armchair

$3,450.00 worth of sublime elegance!

A good example of the sophistication of English 18th Century Country House or Urban Mansion furniture, this is a mahogany open armchair in the French taste. Excellent condition, great patina and well carved, this elegant chair is of a type designed by the Adam Brothers and made by such luminaries as Chippendale, the Linnell Brothers, Mayhew and Ince, and the other great cabinetmakers of the late 18th century. While we cannot presently definitely pin down a maker, the wild feet that resemble old rolling pin handles certainly most suggest John and William Linnell. The architects and interior designers, John, Robert and James Adam, set the neoclassic style for the closing years of the 18th century, and contracted either Chippendale or the Linnells to manufacture the furniture and fittings to their fashionable designs for the aristocracy.

There are excellent Edwardian copies made C1900,http://www.windsorhouseantiques.co.uk/stock/d/hepplewhite-design-mahogany-framed-chair/344201and it was only after we cut out the dust cloth that we were able to see the construction and be quite certain of its C1775 manufacture.

Compare with a similar single chair. A pair would be three times the price. http://www.hydeparkantiques.com/item/a-george-iii-mahogany-upholstered-open-armchair/#1
