C1777 Scarce set of Georgian 12 Dessert Spoons, Old English Bead Pattern.

$1,200.00 rare set of 12.

This set of 12 sterling silver, George III dessert spoons is difficult to find. Some have very clear hallmarks for London, 1776 and 1777, and sterling silver, and the sponsor's mark for George Smith III. Four have no marks. This is almost certainly because the hallmarks were struck by the assay office in the small of the shank, although this is late for such a placement. The reason this placement was retired and the marks placed further away form the bowl, is that it was common for the spoon to break in two when the stamp was punched. Silversmiths then has to repair the broken spoons, which often lead to incomplete, stretched or compressed, or missing hallmarks. I am sure this is why some spoons are without their marks. Each spoon is 17 cm long. Total weight 384 grams.
