C1780 Dutch Parquetry Bureau Cylinder Desk
A very impressive and dramatic Dutch late 18th century cylinder bureau. The Adam style, neoclassical inlay of paterae, the ovals derived form Creco-Roman sources, are rare on Dutch furniture. The Dutch favoured marquetry of trailing vegetation and birds on all furniture including neoclassical styles. Here the paterae and "barber's pole" inlay produce a striking effect on the basically Baroque bombe form. The writing surface is pulled out by the two knobs and the cylinder automatically slides up and into the piece of furniture. The three drawers below provide ample storage space. It is the kind of useful furniture that also provides a lot of character in an otherwise featureless space. The inlay is probably ebony and boxwood, while the vast expanses are walnut. The drawer linings are oak.
114 cm tall, 120 cm wide and 50 cm deep.
