C1780 Louis XVI Satinwood and Rosewood Commode with secret!

Of our many 18th century French commodes this one has a particularly interesting secret. This C1780 Louis XVI five drawer commode in Satinwood, Rosewood and probably Amaranth, retains its original marble top. 18th century furniture makers did buy old, used furniture to break up and reuse for new projects. Recycling is hardly a new concept. We know they did this because the inventories done at their deaths include old furniture and wood and in one case, a hencoop!

The drawer bottom of the central drawer of this commode is a recycled 17th century, Louis XIV wall painting. Now there's recycling!

127 cm wide. 89 cm tall and 56 cm deep.
