C1780 Pair Louis XVI Chapeau a Gendarme Fauteuil en Cabriole Armchairs

SOLD the elegant pair

This wonderful pair of fine boned, superior, Louis XVI style and period open armchairs have been reglued, and re-upholstered, retaining the original horsehair pads, of course, as always. The delicious chairs are fauteuil en cabriole, open armchairs with a concave back for ergonomic support, and are of the type decorated with little carved chapeau a gendarme (policemen's hats) at the top corners of the back. It was a standard form during the reign of Louis XVI, but these are much more elegant than the usual example. The Caca d'Oie (literally goose poo) green paintwork is substantially original. We are thrilled with the harmonies between the embroidered silk, gimp and paint. Floral embroidered silk was a typical upholstery fabric for the wealthy at the time.
