C1780 Rare Set of 6 Perfect Swiss Nyon Louis XVI Hand Painted Plates

$2,700.00 set of 6

A set of six perfect plates of this type is as rare as it is magnificent. They are well worth being in a museum collection*. The plates are 24.5 cm in diameter. The formal gilded decoration consists of a foliate and scroll border, oval laurel leaf frames to reserves, and swags of "pearls". The floral sprays in the reserves and forming the alternating swags are finely painted and bright. The scattering of a spray of roses and a couple of sprigs of cornflowers contrasts with the rigid classicism of the rest of the decoration. Marie Antoinette patronised Nyon, and we see here sprigs of blue cornflowers, Chantilly sprigs, her favourite pattern in porcelain and textiles. Blue fish mark.

The factory functioned from 1781 till 1813. As the British Museum pithily observes: "Porcelain factory founded by Jacques Dortu and Ferdinand Müller, principally manufacturing domestic wares. Some notable customers included the Queen of Naples, the Queen of Spain and Marie Antoinette."
