C1780 set of 3 Louis XVI Chairs by Claude Chevigny, Paris

$9,500.00 signed set of 3.

The set of three painted Louis XVI chairs was bought in Paris. There is a bergere (enclosed armchair), a fauteuil en cabriole (open armchair with concave back) and a chaise, (a side chair). Only the side chair is signed, so the group has to remain as a set. This is a normal situation as not all chairs in a large set were signed, so as the set has been broken into smaller groups one signed chair is customarily included in the group. The standard with pairs of chairs is to find one stamped, and one not.

Claude Chevigny became a master 27th April 1768. His atelier was in the rue de Clery, now 2nd Arr, Paris . His patrons included the Duc de Choiseul for his Chateau de Canteloup, as well as the Duc de Montmorency

His chairs can be seen in the Count Nissim de Camondo Museum, Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and The Louvre Museum, Palais du Louvre complex, Paris.
