C1785 Hepplewhite George III Mahogany French Taste Open Armchair

Upholstered on the back and seat, this library or easy chair is remarkably comfortable. It stands 90 cm tall, 60 cm wide and is 63 cm deep. This facet of late 18th century neoclassical taste is generally associated with the published designs of George Hepplewhite. These were understood to have been published posthumously by his widow, Alice. There is so little evidence that George Hepplewhite even existed that it has been suggested it was a nom de plume under which Alice could publish her designs. However, George, real person or literary figment, gets all the credit and poor Alice is forgotten.
