C1785 Louis XVI Plum Pudding Mahogany, Brass and Tortoiseshell, Marble Top Commode

This is a particularly splendid example of the  very square, low, long Louis XVI commode. This five drawer commode is in Plum Pudding mahogany. The "raisins' ra the dark ovals in the figure. The commode is further enhanced by brass fluting in the pilasters on the front and back corners. The toupie legs are protected by brass shoulders and sabot. Further brass moulding borders the drawer fronts, the plinth and side panels. The trellis plaques and the Greek key pattern are brass and tortoiseshell parquetry. Brass handles and escutcheons complete the decoration. The grey marble top is original.

127 cm wide, 59 cm deep, and 89.5 cm tall.

We await a replacement lock for the central top drawer from Paris, and the three brass flutes on the right hand back are missing, so our trusty restorer has imitated them with gilt work. It seems we can no longer get such brass channeling from Paris.
