C1882 London Pair Impressive Sterling Silver Sweetmeat Baskets, Robert Harper

Heavy and cast, these pierced baskets in the Louis XVI (16th) style reek quality. Each is 15 cm wide and 8 cm tall. One is 334 grams and its pair is 338 grams. Each has a different cypher on the inside base. The scrolling lip is beaded, and punctuated with acanthus leaves. Below that there is a neat trellis, with a pierced chain border at the top and bottom, and overlaid upon this is a series of foliate swags. The foot rim is composed of conjoining rocaille C scrolls. Hallmarked for sterling silver, London, 1882, and with Victoria's profile for the tax. The maker, RH, is  for Robert Harper, of the Red Lion, Clerkenwell, London, in his final year in operation. He had first registered in 1859. These could also be used as wine bottle coasters. The quality and weight are decidedly superior.
