C1800 French Provincial Regence style Commode in Oak

The handsome French provincial commode arbalete is beautifully made and has a wonderful colour. I do not normally much like French bourgeoise furniture in solid native woods, but this is a particularly fine example. Arbalete describes the shape of the facade, which resembles the line of a crossbow. The four drawer commode is in the style of the Regence, 1720s to 1740s basically, but was made either at the end of the 18th century or early in the 19th century. Using the best craftsmanship, it features mortise, tenon and pegged joints: indestructible! The top is oak, unlike the grand, veneered city pieces, which usually sport a marble slab. The double throw steel locks appear to be original, as do the bronze figural handles, and escutcheons. This is much more casual than our usual 1700s French furniture, but is still rich in personality and utility.

128 cm wide. 64 cm deep, and 89 cm tall.
