C1800 Gilded Copper Circular French Snuff Box

Circular, engine turned snuff boxes like this in gold carry hallmarks dating them to the 1770s right through to the 1820s. The particular engine turning on this one suggest a late 18th century date. This is the gilded copper version for the less affluent aristocrat or haute bourgeoise gentleman of style. Fortunately the gilding is in good condition, and the metal is thick and robust, so no dents have marred its elegance. Tobacco being unfashionable at present, it is unlikely to be used for snuff again. However, most of us have pills of some kind in the 21st century, so the practicality of this box is undiminished!

7.2 cm in diameter and 2.5 cm thick. Both sides are identical in appearance.
