C1800 Oil Painting of a Couple Eloping(?)

This late 18th century genre oil painting has been relined and restored in 2000. This Old Master formerly belonged to Neil Robertson, of Open Garden Scheme note, sadly missed. The couple are crossing a bridge at night, and the man carries a cloth bundle and a basket full of copper utensils. The lady seems distracted. Hence my suspicion they are running away together: very romantic!

The canvas is about 39 cm by 49 cm. The gilded carved wood Florentine frame is 57 cm by 67 cm.
