C1810 Hepplewhite French Style Georgian Serpentine Commode Chest
This grand early 19th century serpentine Mahogany chest of drawers, or commode*, features a brushing slide above a flight of three graduated drawers. The brushing slide was an early form of dry cleaning. It has been relined with navy baize during restoration. Clothes were laid on the slide and brushed clean. Most outer wear was not washable. The brasses are good, but not original. The luxurious serpentine front was expensive and difficult to make, so they are rare. The graceful splay feet are quintessentially French Hepplewhite. The canted corners are enriched with Tulipwood crossbanding and boxwood border inlay. Showroom condition.
99 cm tall. 119 cm wide and 57 cm deep.
We also have an 18th century Chippendale one in stock if more gravitas is required.
*Grand chest of drawers made for opulent public rooms not usually bedrooms.
