C1815 Pair Brass Inlaid Regency Sabre Leg Chairs

$1,250.00 the spectacular pair

A spectacular pair of Georgian, Regency brass inlaid chairs with sabre legs. The chairs have complex foliate brass inlay inset into the top rail, and a brass rosette inlaid in the centre of the splat. Appropriate silk upholstery. The chairs are simulated rosewood on beech. Whenever a problem arises the English can find a different solution to continental Europeans. The wars with Napoleon drastically cut the availability of Rosewood (Dalbergia Nigra) and mahogany from Brazil. Forced to use the native European timbers, which are mostly yellow (even oak) the Europeans embraced the pale golden woods, and the Biedermeier style (1815-1848) developed. In contrast, the British used the native yellow beech and skilfully stained it to resemble the desired rosewood, even painting on the dark figuring with India ink and feathers. Problem solved!
