C1815 Regency “Egyptian” Mahogany Desk by W’m Wilkinson, London
This delicious little two drawer table desk would be irresistible even if it were not signed. However, it is signed on the drawer front: "Wilkinson 14 Ludgate Hill". The elegant trestles are in the Egyptian taste, copied from pylons, and stand on platforms, with bun feet. The bun feet conceal brass castors. The drawer fronts are in tablet form, with the larger right hand drawer including the central as well as right hand tablet. The fine bronze lion pulls are period but not original. Both sides of the desk appear identical, as blind drawer fronts and handles are on the back of the desk. The mahogany is rich, well patinated and well figured.
William and Thomas Wilkinson dissolved their partnership in 1808, and William set up in 14 Ludgate Hill, London, taking over the old established firm of Quentin Kaye. About 1825 William brought in his two sons, adding "& sons" to the stamp.
74 cm tall, 86 cm wide and 45 cm deep.
