C1820 (and Later Top) Directoire Cherrywood Wine Table/Gueridon.
The base of this elegant country table is Directoire style and made about 1820. The urban mahogany versions would have been made C1795, the Revolutionary period, so we have to allow for the time lag of fashion. The column, with entasis, rests on an hexagonal plinth from which the three cabriole legs radiate. The top is a replacement but is still a snap top, and demonstrates the finest craftsmanship. Cherrywood is available is small width boards, so two boards have been joined to make the circular top. The spline joint, named in the mid-1700s, is a strong and elegant joint of the two boards.
72 cm tall and 73 cm diameter.
