C1820 Coalport(?) Regency Floral Painted Spill Vase

Hand painted with flowers in a white reserve against a cobalt blue ground, the trumpet shaped spill vase stands 12 cm tall and is 9.5 cm in diameter. The reverse, the part that would be visible in the overmantle mirror,  shows a gilded flower. Spill vases are excellent for cut flowers in water. However, they were designed to stand on the mantlepiece in pairs and to hold spills. Spills were any convenient thing such as an old rilled up love letter from last week's flame, to small twigs, that would do the essential duty of transferring flame between the fire to a candle. As ever, the Gorgeous Georgians designed the utilitarian to also be ravishingly beautiful!
