C1820 Georgian “Old Sheffield Plate” Wine Funnel
"Old Sheffield Plate" is the precursor to electroplating. However, it is a much greater and more difficult craft that survived for over 100 years, from C1743, till electrolysis killed it. Labour was cheap and materials expensive: the opposite of our world. A sandwich was made with copper, and sterling silver one or, later, both sides. This went through rollers to make a flat sheet. Objects were painstakingly raised from this flat sheet. EPNS has a thin coating of pure silver, Old Sheffield Plate has a thick sterling silver coat.
11 cm wide, 16 cm tall.
