This is an excellent condition pair of Georgian 'Old Sheffield Plate' candlesticks. The storm shades are modern replacements, but accurately represent the clear glass, bell shape of the originals. While storm shades were not essential in English houses, they were a welcome addition to the candle illumination in such places as the Caribbean colonies and, especially, India, where a cooling breeze was most welcome at dinners where the Europeans were compelled by etiquette to wear uniforms and dresses designed for a cooler British climate. The Australian climate has similar demands. I expect most of the lamps with wind protection were designed with the Raj in mind. At this time India was still primarily a commercial possession of the East India Company. The political and military annexation of India that made British sovereigns Empresses and emperors did not happen till Victoria's reign and the last British Emperor was George VI, the title being abolished in 1948.
