C1820 Regency Spill Vase Hand Painted with Flowers

All that we have of this Regency, George III porcelain spill vase is in good condition, with very minor wear to the gilding. However, it originally had three feet, which are now gone. The rich blue ground is lavishly enriched with gilding. The flowers painted within the white cartouche are beautifully observed and executed. It stands 9cm tall and is 8 cm in diameter.

A spill vase was not used for flowers. Spills were twigs, rolled up letters etc, which could be used to transfer fire from a candle to the fireplace, or the reverse, or to light pipes. Spill vases usually came in pairs or a set of three and stood on the mantle shelf.
