C1820 Set 6 (5+1) George III Hepplewhite Camelback Chairs

$2,650.00 set 6

A fine set of 6 Georgian Hepplewhite Camelback chairs is represented in our Hallowe'en window by the carver chair and one of the five standards. Probably crafted as late as the 1820s, the set of six is mahogany, freshly polished up, and firm of frame. The upholstery is inherited, and is perfectly sound, clean and rich: a scarlet brocade. $2650 the handsome set.

Hallowe'en, or All Hallows Eve, is an ancient Western Christian (so primarily Roman Catholic, not Orthodox) festival. I am sure the Russian Orthodox church could have done an Hallowe'en of astonishing magnificence, but, alas, that did not come to pass. American Catholics have done a great job, however. It has been celebrated on the last day of October since 835 Anno Dimini, having been moved to this date by Pope Gregory III. I hope our window has captured the modern spirit of the festival.
