C1820 Vieux Paris Vase with Troubadour Style Painting

$110.00 a souvenir of Paris.

200 years old, and typically Empire in style, this Charles X, C1820,  "Old Paris" porcelain vase is ovoid in shape, with a socle, and handles in the form of Empress Josephine's swans, with upswept wings. The painted scene on the obverse is influenced by the Romantic fascination with the Middle Ages, fashionable at this time. Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey" is part of this movement. The dancing couple a vaguely medieval, and painted in a rapid, naive style. The French call this the Troubadour style.  The reverse shows a landscape, to be seen in the mirror behind.  20 cm tall and 12 cm wide at the swans, this vase has considerable wear to the gilding, which is par for the course with Vieux Paris. The gilding was fugitive, and the maids thorough!

There is a tiny chip to the top of one wing.
