C1825 PAIR George IVth Regency Rosewood Chairs
This wonderful pair of Regency, George IVth chairs is executed in Brazilian Rosewood. Dense and oleaginous, Rosewood is impervious to borer, but its principle charms are its vibrant and rich colour and figure, and its ability to be carved finely and delicately and be robust. Carvings executed in Rosewood in the mid-19th century are still crisp, while the same in Australian Cedar have usually completely worn away. The sabre legs feature a scroll and acanthus leaves. The back is made up of Vitruvian scrolls and acanthus with a blossom taking central place on the splat. Elegant, strong and deliciously rich in colour, these are way above the average Regency chair. Freshly upholstered in purple, yellow and green stripes: very Regency!
