C1830 set 6 GILLOWS of Lancaster Dining Chairs

SOLD set of 6.

This fine set of six George IVth dining chairs in the Hackworth patter, by Gillows of Lancaster. In simulated Rosewood, our set of chairs is upholstered in a blue ground tapestry. The reeded legs benefit form the rare knee enrichment of the anthemion, and the even rarer central seat rail florette. The dipped toprail is decorated with anthemion with a row of beads across the central splat.

An exactly similar set of chairs was sold by through ChristiesSouth Kensington in  2103 for GBP 3,750 incl BP. (about A$7,500) against an estimate of GBP3000-5000. See image with white background. https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-set-of-six-george-iv-rosewood-5695292-details.aspx

Page 221 of Susan E. Stuart's 2 volume work on Gillows, illustrates a chair with the identical back to these. In 1822, Gillows charged Earl Manvers 55 shillings per chair for a set of sixteen and a matching child's chair.  These were not for the poor!
